Decision Guide

Online vs Classroom Food Hygiene Training — Which Should You Choose?

Both formats teach the same UK food hygiene syllabus, but they suit different needs. The online self-paced course is faster, cheaper, and instant — ideal for high-turnover hospitality teams and casual staff onboarding. The RSPH-accredited classroom or webinar course is Ofqual-regulated — required when your contract, EHO, or insurer specifically asks for a regulated qualification. Compare them side-by-side below.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions

Is online food hygiene training accepted in the UK?

Yes — most UK hospitality employers accept an online food hygiene certificate provided the course covers the legally required content (hazards, allergens, temperature control, cleaning, personal hygiene). The KitchenTonic online certificate evidences compliance with Retained Regulation (EC) No 852/2004. If your employer or contract specifically requires an Ofqual-regulated qualification, choose the RSPH-accredited live course.

Will an EHO accept an online food hygiene certificate?

EHOs check that staff have been trained appropriately — they do not enforce a specific certificate. An online certificate that covers the required syllabus is generally accepted as evidence of training compliance. EHOs are more likely to scrutinise the quality of training (and the records you keep) than the format. RSPH/Ofqual qualifications carry the strongest weight.

Are the online and RSPH courses the same syllabus?

Both cover the same core UK food hygiene content (the RSPH specification 603/2395/4). The RSPH course is structured around the official learning outcomes and assessed by an RSPH-supplied exam. The online course covers the same material in a self-paced format with an internal multiple-choice assessment.

Why is online cheaper than RSPH classroom?

RSPH classroom delivery includes the RSPH centre fees, the regulated assessment, certificate printing and dispatch, trainer time and venue costs. Online removes the live trainer, venue, and physical certificate costs — and you pay only for the assessment and platform.
