Our live RSPH courses are taught and assessed against the official RSPH specification (Ofqual Qualification Number 603/2395/4 and equivalents). Frequently Asked Questions

Food Safety — Common Questions

What level of food safety training do I need in the UK?

For most food handlers (chefs, kitchen porters, front-of-house serving food) Level 2 is the standard. Supervisors and head chefs are expected to hold Level 3 (Supervising Food Safety). Quality, technical or operations leads in manufacturing should hold Level 4. Level 1 is awareness-only and is generally reserved for staff who do not handle open food.

Is food safety training a legal requirement in the UK?

UK food safety law does not name a specific qualification, but Retained Regulation (EC) No 852/2004 requires every food handler to be trained, instructed or supervised to a level appropriate to their role. EHOs and insurers expect to see documented training — typically Level 2 for food handlers and Level 3 for supervisors.

What is the difference between RSPH-accredited and online courses?

The RSPH-accredited routes (live webinar, classroom or in-house) are Ofqual-regulated qualifications issued by the Royal Society for Public Health. They are the regulated qualifications most EHOs and insurers expect to see. Our online self-paced courses cover the same syllabus content and meet EC 852/2004 training criteria, but the certificate is issued by KitchenTonic and is not Ofqual-regulated. Choose RSPH if your employer or contract requires a regulated qualification; choose online for speed and flexibility.

Can you deliver food safety training in-house at our premises?

Yes — all Level 2, 3 and 4 food safety courses can be delivered in-house at your premises across the UK. In-house delivery is RSPH-accredited and includes the same official assessment. Request a quote via the contact form for a tailored programme.

How long is a food safety certificate valid for?

There is no statutory expiry date for food hygiene training in the UK. The Food Standards Agency and most Environmental Health Officers recommend refresher training every 3 years. Our certificates are issued with a 36-month validity for that reason.
