Frequently Asked Questions
Online Course: Common Questions
Is this online food hygiene certificate recognised in the UK?
Yes — the certificate evidences that staff have been trained in food hygiene to the level expected under Retained Regulation (EC) No 852/2004. UK food safety law does not name a specific qualification, but it does require every food handler to be trained, supervised, or instructed in food hygiene to a level appropriate to their role. Our online course is designed to meet that requirement. Note: this is NOT an Ofqual-regulated qualification — if your employer or EHO specifically requires an Ofqual/RSPH certificate, see the RSPH-accredited version of this course.
Will my employer accept an online food hygiene certificate?
Most UK hospitality employers accept an online food hygiene certificate provided the course covers the legally required content (food hygiene, hazards, allergens, temperature control, cleaning, and personal hygiene). Our online Level 2 covers all of these and is issued with a unique verification code. If you work in a setting where your contract or your EHO specifically asks for an Ofqual-regulated qualification, choose the RSPH version instead.
How long does the online course take?
The full course (training plus the assessment) takes most learners 2–3 hours. You can pause and resume at any time, retake the quiz with unlimited attempts, and download your certificate the moment you pass.
Can I print my certificate?
Yes — your certificate is issued as a downloadable PDF the moment you pass the assessment, ready to print or share digitally. A posted physical certificate can also be ordered at checkout if you want a hard copy for display.
How long is the online certificate valid for?
There is no statutory expiry for food hygiene training in the UK, but the Food Standards Agency and most Environmental Health Officers recommend refresher training every 3 years. Our online certificate is issued with a 36-month validity for that reason.
What is the difference between the online course and the RSPH version?
Both courses cover the same core food hygiene content and have the same 30-question multiple-choice assessment (pass mark 20/30). The RSPH version is Ofqual-regulated and issues a certificate from the Royal Society for Public Health — chosen by businesses that need a regulated qualification. The online version is self-paced, instant, and issued by KitchenTonic — chosen by businesses that need fast, flexible training that still meets the training requirement of EC 852/2004.
Can I retake the assessment if I fail?
Yes — the online assessment has unlimited attempts. The course is designed to teach you the material, not to catch you out, so if you do not pass first time you can review the modules and try again straight away.
